Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Women’s Captain Across All Formats

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 7th October 2026

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all three formats, bringing an end to her leadership tenure with immediate effect. The veteran batter will, however, continue to represent India as a player. Harmanpreet, 37, has been one of the central figures in Indian women’s cricket and led the team through several significant campaigns. Her tenure included India’s historic triumph in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup and another gold-medal-winning campaign at the 2026 Asian Games.

She took over as India’s T20I captain in 2016 and became the team’s full-time captain across formats following Mithali Raj’s retirement in 2022. During her leadership, Harmanpreet captained India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is.

Announcing her decision, Harmanpreet reflected on the years she spent leading the national side and described the move as an emotional one. She said her time as captain had brought numerous memories, experiences and sacrifices, while stressing that her journey with Indian cricket would continue. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acknowledged Harmanpreet’s contribution to the national team and confirmed that she would remain available as a player. Her decision therefore marks a change in leadership rather than an end to her international cricket career.

The BCCI is yet to officially announce Harmanpreet’s successor. Smriti Mandhana, who has served as her deputy, is among the names being discussed as a potential replacement. Harmanpreet’s departure from the captaincy comes after years at the forefront of India’s women’s team. She will now continue her international career in a playing role as the team prepares for its next phase under new leadership.
