Ashok Gehlot Withdraws From The Presidential Race For Congress

After more than 80 Rajasthan Congress MLAs sent their resignation letters to Assembly Speaker CP Joshi at his residence on September 25 night, high drama ensued in Rajasthan. If Ashok Gehlot wins the Congress leadership election, the MLAs of the Gehlot faction took a stance against Sachin Pilot and his bid to become the next chief minister.

However, ahead of a legislature party meeting convened by central party observers Ajay Maken and Mallikarjun Kharge, 82 Gehlot-supporting MLAs turned in their resignation letters.

The senior party leadership quickly acted to address the developing issue. As party observers who were in Rajasthan, Mallikarjun Kharge and Ajay Maken immediately interacted with Ashok Gehlot.

According to reports, Ashok Gehlot informed KC Venugopal on September 25, “Mere bass mein kuch nahi hain” (nothing is in my hands).

Gehlot loyalists’ requirements

The MLAs who supported Ashok Gehlot as chief minister proposed three conditions as the party sought a settlement to the crisis:

After the Congress presidential election, a choice should be made regarding the chief minister.

The chief minister shouldn’t come from the Pilot camp but rather from the group of MLAs who supported the government throughout the 2020 political crisis.

Meetings between AICC observers should take place in groups rather than one-on-one as requested by the high command.

Gehlot Exiting the Congress’s Presidency Ashok Gehlot discovered himself losing the favor of the party’s high command as the resignation of Gehlot loyalists threw the Rajasthan Congress into trouble. Ashok Gehlot is no longer running for president of Congress, a top Congressman told.
