Assam Rifles Intercepts Significant Cache of Arms and Ammunition Near Indo-Myanmar Border

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Assam Rifles conducted a successful operation resulting in the interception of a substantial quantity of arms, ammunition, and other war-like stores near the Indo-Myanmar Border in Mon district of Nagaland on April 29, 2024. The search operation, initiated during the early morning hours, led to the apprehension of one individual and the recovery of a significant arsenal, including heavy weaponry.

The recovered items comprise 11 Mortar tubes (81mm), 4 Tubes (106mm), 10 Pistols, 198 Hand Held Radio Sets, one satellite phone, one Kenbo bike, one Bolero vehicle, and other war-like stores. This seizure marks a significant success for Assam Rifles’ ongoing border sealing operation. The recovery of such heavy-caliber, military-grade weapons in close proximity to the border area is a major blow to the nefarious designs of hostile elements seeking to disrupt peace in the region.

The presence of military-grade weapons and nearly 200 Hand Held Radio Sets underscores the potential threat posed by these illicit arms. These items could have been used to inflict significant harm and destabilize the region if they had fallen into the wrong hands. The apprehension of the individual and the recovery of these dangerous items represent a crucial step in maintaining national security and safeguarding the peace and stability of the area.

Following the operation, the apprehended individual and the recovered items were promptly handed over to the Nagaland Police for further investigation and legal proceedings. The swift and decisive action taken by the alert troops of Assam Rifles has effectively thwarted the unlawful activities of disruptive elements, preventing the escalation of a serious security situation along the Indo-Myanmar border.

As one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), the AR operates under the administrative jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, with operational control overseen by the Indian Army.Established in 1835 by the British in the Assam region, the Cachar Levy serves as the precursor to the modern-day Assam Rifles, making it the oldest paramilitary force in existence. Initially comprising around seven hundred and fifty personnel, the force was created as a police unit aimed at safeguarding settlements from tribal raids and other threats as British influence expanded into the northeastern regions of India.
