According to a spokeswoman, an insurgent assault on a convoy observing Nigeria’s power grid facilities on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of at least 50 Boko Haram insurgents and the disappearance of seven members of the infrastructure security team. Despite being battered by the military and internal conflict, Boko Haram, which has been waging an insurgency for 15 years, mostly in the northeast, continues to pose a threat by carrying out lethal operations against both government targets and civilians.

During the patrol expedition, security personnel were assaulted by over 200 Boko Haram fighters, according to Babawale Afolabi, spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Defence Corp, a government organization established to safeguard infrastructure. More than fifty rebels were killed in the firefight, according to Afolabi, but seven operatives went missing. He claimed that efforts are being made to locate them in the woods. “A few others” in the security force were hurt, he said.

Nigerian authorities claim that Boko Haram has cells in the predominantly Muslim Niger state, where the group has previously carried out assaults against both military personnel and civilians, despite the fact that the group primarily operates in the northeast. According to a military official, suspected terrorists murdered five troops in a separate attack in northeastern Borno state on Saturday.
