The TMC on December 4, 2025, announced the suspension of its Murshidabad MLA, Humayun Kabir, following his declaration that he would build a mosque modelled after the historic Babri Masjid in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. Party senior leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said the party had previously cautioned Kabir multiple times, but his repeated remarks amounted to gross indiscipline and risked communal tension.
Kabir had publicly announced that the foundation-stone “shilanyas” of the proposed mosque would take place on December 6 at Beldanga — the 33rd anniversary of the 1992 demolition of the original Babri Masjid. He insisted he would proceed with the plan regardless of opposition, prompting sharp reaction from both within and outside his party.
TMC leadership condemned the announcement, calling the statement provocative and unnecessary, and blamed him for communalising political issues. The party made clear it wanted no association with the plan — underlining that it rejects communal politics and strives to maintain peace and harmony in the state.
Following his suspension, Humayun Kabir responded by saying he would resign as MLA and launch a new political outfit in the coming weeks. He also vowed to continue with the December 6 event, and threatened to stage a dharna if authorities attempted to block the ceremony.
