Two Australian women cricketers participating in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup were allegedly harassed by a man on a motorcycle while walking in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, just two days before Australia’s crucial match against South Africa.
According to police reports, the players were en route from the Radisson Blu Hotel to a nearby café when a man, later identified as Aqeel Khan, approached them on a motorcycle. He reportedly touched one of the players inappropriately before fleeing the scene. The cricketers immediately alerted their team security officer, who contacted local authorities. The accused was quickly apprehended by the Indore police and taken into custody.
The incident drew swift condemnation from Cricket Australia, which described it as a serious violation of player safety and personal dignity. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also expressed concern and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the security of all international players visiting the country.
The case has sparked political debate in Madhya Pradesh. Opposition leaders criticized the state government for failing to ensure the safety of women in public spaces, while the ruling BJP highlighted the rapid response in apprehending the accused. The BCCI Secretary termed the incident “very unfortunate” and emphasized that the law must take its course.
Authorities have confirmed that the affected players are receiving support and are in good spirits, with the team continuing preparations for their upcoming matches. Investigations are ongoing, and further details are expected as police probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. Cricket Australia and local authorities have pledged to work together to prevent any recurrence and maintain a secure environment for players during the tournament.
