Ban on Aman Sherawat lifted by WFI

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has officially revoked the suspensions of Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat and promising junior wrestler Neha Sangwan, marking a significant development in Indian wrestling’s disciplinary landscape. The decision means both athletes are now eligible to return to competition and take part in upcoming league and international events.

Sehrawat, who competes in the men’s 57kg freestyle category, had been suspended for one year after failing to make the required weight at the senior World Championships in September. He had cited a sudden stomach ache on the eve of the weigh‐in as the reason for the lapse. Sangwan, meanwhile, was issued a two‐year suspension after a similar weight‐management failure at the U20 World Championships in August.

Following a meeting of the WFI disciplinary committee on November 13, the panel reviewed written representations from both wrestlers. Given their strong international performance records and this being their first documented violations, the committee recommended lifting the sanctions. The WFI accepted this recommendation and issued an official order restoring their eligibility, while emphasising that any future breach will attract “stricter disciplinary action.”

With their suspensions lifted, both wrestlers have been cleared to participate in the revived Pro Wrestling League (PWL), set to return after a six-year hiatus. Their reinstatement marks a fresh start for two athletes who had been seen as key prospects for India’s wrestling ambitions.

While the reversal is a relief for Sehrawat and Sangwan, the federation’s warning signals that vigilance around weight control and discipline remains non‐negotiable. For the athletes, regaining match fitness and rebuilding competitive momentum ahead of major international tournaments will now be their immediate focus. Wrestling observers see the move as a balance between enforcement and support, acknowledging past success while demanding future consistency.
