Bangladesh Air Force base in Cox’s Bazar attacked, one killed: Reports

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 24th February 2025

Local media reports indicate that one individual died due to violence at the Air Force base in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, on Monday. As per a notice from the nation’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a faction of troublemakers assaulted the air force base, reported the Dhaka Tribune.

The alert, signed by ISPR’s assistant director, Ayesha Siddiqua, indicated that the Bangladesh Air Force was taking appropriate measures in response. However, reports suggest that the incident happened as a result of an airport expansion project necessitating the displacement of residents in the area, a decision contested by the locals.

Alleged videos of the violence appeared on social media with assertions that unknown wrongdoers assaulted the base in Samiti Par. Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin reported that one individual was killed in the event. Family members have identified the deceased as Shihab Kabir Nahid (25) from Samitipara, as per a report.

Sabuktagin Mahmud Shohel, the resident medical officer at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, informed the daily that an individual approximately 25 years old was pronounced “brought dead” at the hospital. Shohel noted that the victim had significant wounds on the back of his head and indicated that the cause of death would be determined following the autopsy.

The violence follows a few hours after Bangladesh’s home affairs adviser, retired Lieutenant General M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, emphasized the interim government’s dedication to upholding law and order during a pre-dawn press conference. He informed the press at his home in Dhaka around 3am on Monday that the “cohorts” of the removed Awami League government of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina were attempting to destabilize the nation, but “they will not be spared under any circumstances.”
