The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the verge of appointing Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate as assistant coaches for the Indian cricket team, according to a report by Cricbuzz. Although an official announcement from the team management is still pending, the report indicates that both Nayar and Ten Doeschate will join newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir for the forthcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Abhishek Nayar previously served as the assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), while Ryan Ten Doeschate, a former Dutch international, was KKR’s fielding coach during Gambhir’s tenure as the team’s mentor. T Dilip, who was the fielding coach under Rahul Dravid, is also expected to be retained in the new support staff lineup.

Despite the clarity on the assistant coaches, there are still uncertainties regarding the appointment of the bowling coach. Former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel is being considered a strong contender for the role. Morkel has prior experience working with Gambhir as part of the KKR team, where he played between 2014 and 2016, even winning the title in 2014.

The report suggests that Dilip and Nayar will accompany the team to Sri Lanka, but it remains uncertain when Ten Doeschate will join. Currently, Ten Doeschate is part of the coaching staff for the LA Knight Riders in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC). Discussions between the BCCI and Morkel regarding the bowling coach position are ongoing, but no concrete decisions have been made yet.

As the Indian cricket team prepares for the Sri Lanka series, the anticipated appointments of Nayar and Ten Doeschate are expected to bring valuable expertise and experience to the coaching setup. Both coaches have a history of working with Gambhir, which should facilitate a smooth transition and effective collaboration within the team.

The inclusion of Morne Morkel, if finalized, would further strengthen the coaching staff. Morkel’s extensive experience as an international fast bowler and his previous association with Gambhir could prove beneficial for India’s bowling unit.

With these strategic appointments, the BCCI aims to bolster the support staff and enhance the team’s performance in upcoming matches. The collaboration between seasoned professionals like Gambhir, Nayar, Ten Doeschate, and possibly Morkel, underscores the board’s commitment to providing the best possible guidance and support to the Indian cricket team.
