Bengaluru police have issued a notice to the wife of a Bengaluru-based techie who committed suicide earlier this week, asking her to record her statement within three days. Nikita Singhania’s mother and brother were also requested to provide statements. The notice was posted at Nikita Singhania’s apartment in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Atul Subhash, who worked for a private firm in Bengaluru, committed suicide on Monday, citing abuse from his wife and her family members. He left behind a 24-page suicide note citing emotional suffering caused by marital troubles and various cases brought against him by his wife.
Nikita and her family members have been charged with aiding suicide after Subhash’s brother filed a complaint. Nikita, who works at Accenture, has yet to reply to the charges. The techie’s wife and family members have until Monday to come before Bengaluru police and provide statements. If they fail to comply, they may be arrested based on the evidence gathered thus far.
The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) specifies a maximum punishment of ten years for assisting in committing suicide. Under the old IPC, the sentence for abetment of suicide was less than seven years.
To prevent arrest, the accused must approach the court for anticipatory bail. They would have to seek the Karnataka court because the incident occurred there. Thus, the accused must choose between collaborating with the police investigation by recording their testimonies and pursuing legal options to avoid detention. Following the interrogation, the police may issue an arrest warrant based on the findings.
Amid widespread indignation over the incident, details of Nikita’s 2022 police complaint alleging dowry harassment and abuse by her husband have surfaced. In the lawsuit, Nikita claimed that following her marriage, Subhash and her in-laws requested an additional Rs 10 lakh as dowry.
