BJP Seeks Congress Apology Over Slogans Against PM Modi, Political Tensions Rise in Parliament

News Mania Desk /Piyal Chatterjee/16th December 2025

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday demanded a public apology from the Congress after controversial slogans allegedly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi were raised during a Congress protest in the national capital. The issue has triggered sharp exchanges between the two parties and added to the growing friction during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

The controversy stems from a Congress rally held at Ramlila Maidan, organised to highlight the party’s claims of irregularities in the electoral process and alleged manipulation of voter lists. While the Congress said the protest was aimed at drawing attention to concerns over electoral integrity, the BJP accused sections of the crowd of raising objectionable and threatening slogans against the Prime Minister, a charge that has intensified the political standoff.

Senior BJP leaders condemned the reported slogans, describing them as unacceptable and beyond the scope of democratic protest. The party argued that criticism of the government must remain within constitutional and civil limits, and accused the Congress of allowing its protest to descend into personal attacks. BJP leaders demanded that the Congress leadership, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior figures such as Rahul Gandhi, take responsibility and issue a clear apology.

The Congress, however, rejected the allegations, calling them an attempt to divert attention from the party’s allegations regarding flaws in the electoral system. Congress leaders maintained that their movement was peaceful and issue-based, and accused the BJP of selectively highlighting isolated incidents to undermine the legitimacy of the protest.

The dispute has spilled over into Parliament, where BJP members raised the issue, leading to heated exchanges and disruptions. Opposition parties countered by accusing the ruling party of using the controversy to stifle dissent and deflect scrutiny from substantive issues being raised during the session.

As the winter session continues, the row is expected to further strain relations between the government and the opposition, reflecting the charged political atmosphere ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
