Newly released bodycam footage from the Pennsylvania rally, where former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt, has unveiled that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the shooter, was identified as a suspicious individual before the attack occurred. This footage, sourced from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit and shared on X by Senator Chuck Grassley, highlights crucial details about the incident.
The video captures local police officers and what appears to be a Secret Service agent discussing Crooks’ presence at the rally hours before he attempted to shoot Trump. According to the footage, Crooks, who was just 20 years old, had been flagged as suspicious and was previously reported to authorities. The conversation in the video reveals that Crooks was seen riding a bicycle and was photographed by a police sniper. The footage also shows the officers reviewing images of Crooks taken earlier, providing a timeline of his actions leading up to the attack.
On July 13, Crooks fired at Trump, narrowly missing the former president’s face and grazing his ear. The attack resulted in injuries to three other rally attendees, including the death of a 50-year-old volunteer firefighter. A Secret Service agent responded swiftly, killing Crooks on the spot.
In the wake of this revelation, Senator Chuck Grassley has demanded a thorough investigation into the security lapses surrounding the event. He criticized the Secret Service for their lack of transparency and called for detailed explanations regarding their operational failures. Grassley emphasized the need for accountability and transparency, asserting that such critical incidents require clear answers to prevent future occurrences.
The release of this footage comes amid significant controversy and criticism directed at the Secret Service. Kimberly Cheatle, the then-Director of the Secret Service, resigned following intense scrutiny over the security breaches at the rally. Her resignation came after both Democratic and Republican lawmakers voiced their concerns. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has appointed Deputy Director Ronald Rowe as the acting Director of the Secret Service in the interim.
In a statement addressing the incident, President Joe Biden underscored the gravity of the security failure and pledged that measures would be implemented to ensure such an event does not recur. Biden also indicated plans to appoint a new Secret Service Director soon to restore confidence in the agency’s ability to safeguard public figures.
Senator Grassley’s investigation continues as he seeks clarification from Homeland Security and the acting Secret Service Director about the security arrangements on July 13. Grassley’s letter, addressed to Secretary Mayorkas and Acting Director Rowe, questions the accuracy of information regarding the Secret Service’s jurisdiction over the AGR International building where Crooks was reportedly present. The Senator is pushing for answers about the federal security personnel’s roles and their coordination with local police.
This latest development in the case underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive review of security protocols and inter-agency communication to ensure the safety of public figures and prevent similar incidents in the future.
