Authorities in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are delving into a potentially alarming aspect of the recent bomb hoax emails sent to nearly 100 schools, with suspicions arising over a potential terror connection. The Delhi Police’s Special Cell is now examining whether the threatening emails, originating from a Russian domain via the internet protocol (IP) address, could be linked to terrorism, including involvement from countries like Russia and Pakistan.
Sources within the investigation have hinted at a possible association with the Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and an ISIS module, suggesting a coordinated effort to sow fear and chaos. The email ID used to send the threats, sawariim@mail.ru, has raised eyebrows due to its connection to ISIS propaganda, where “sawariim,” an Arabic term, has been prominently featured since 2014.
According to an official close to the investigation, ISIS has purportedly been orchestrating a cyber warfare campaign against India, with alleged support from the ISI. This revelation has intensified concerns about the safety and security of schools in the region.
In response to the threats, schools swiftly evacuated students as a precautionary measure. Despite thorough searches conducted at each institution, no evidence of any imminent danger was found. Both Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and the home ministry have assured the public that the threats are likely hoaxes. “I request the parents not to panic, and cooperate with the administration in ensuring the safety of schools and the children. The miscreants and culprits will not be spared,” Mr. Saxena reassured.
Kaamini Bhasin, Principal of Delhi Public School, Noida, recounted the response to the threat, stating, “We received a mail regarding a bomb. We decided not to take any risk and also informed the police. The parents have been informed and the students have been sent back home.”
Delhi Education Minister Atishi confirmed the receipt of bomb threats in some schools but emphasized that no suspicious items were discovered during the subsequent searches. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant, determined to uncover any potential links to terrorism and ensure the safety of the community.
