Can Eating Too Fast Lead to Weight Gain? Doctor Shares Simple Ways to Slow Down

Eating meals too quickly could contribute to overeating and potential weight gain, health experts say, emphasizing that the speed at which food is consumed can significantly affect the body’s ability to regulate hunger. According to bariatric surgeon Hrishikesh Salgaonkar of Fortis Hospital in Mumbai, slowing down while eating may help people better manage portion sizes and improve digestion.
Dr. Salgaonkar explained that the body relies on hormonal signals to determine when it is full. These signals, which travel from the gut to the brain, typically take about 20 minutes to activate. When people finish meals very quickly—sometimes in less than 10 minutes—the brain may not receive the message that the stomach is already satisfied. As a result, individuals may continue eating even after they have consumed enough calories.
Fast eating is also commonly associated with the consumption of ultra-processed foods. Such foods are often soft, easy to chew and quickly swallowed, making it easier to consume large portions in a short time. Over time, this pattern can contribute to higher calorie intake and may increase the likelihood of weight gain.
To help people slow down their eating habits, the doctor suggested two simple techniques. The first is to pause for around 30 seconds before taking the first bite. Observing and smelling the food during this brief pause can stimulate the nervous system and trigger digestive processes, preparing the body for the meal. The second recommendation is to chew food thoroughly and take breaks between bites. Placing utensils down while chewing and focusing on each mouthful can help extend the duration of the meal. This practice gives the body enough time to register fullness, reducing the risk of overeating.
