On Monday, Ghosh was questioned at the CBI’s CGO complex office in Salt Lake, after which he was taken to the Nizam Palace office by the Anti-Corruption Branch (CBI), where the arrest procedure was carried out.
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, was arrested by the CBI after being interrogated for over two weeks regarding graft charges linked to the institution, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered.
On Monday, Ghosh was questioned at the CBI’s CGO complex office in Salt Lake, after which he was taken to the Nizam Palace office by the Anti-Corruption Branch (CBI), where the arrest procedure was carried out.
Ghosh’s actions came under scrutiny following the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital on August 9, which led to levelling of corruption allegations against him. Although, he resigned from R G Kar in the aftermath of the incident, he was reinstated as principal of National Medical College by the state government within four hours.
The FIR names Ghosh, along with Ma Tara Traders in Madhya Jhorehat, Eshan Cafe in Belgachia, and Khana Louha. The FIR was filed based on a case initiated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the government following a complaint from Debal Kumar Ghosh, Senior Special Secretary to the Government of West Bengal. The CBI has filed cases under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), Section 420 (fraud) of the IPC, and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
In addition to financial corruption allegations, the CBI is investigating the rape and murder of the woman doctor, as Ghosh was the hospital’s administrator during the incidents. He has faced repeated interrogations, with another summons to the CGO complex on Monday.
The investigation began after a complaint from Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent at R G Kar, who accused Ghosh of financial irregularities, including medical waste corruption, embezzlement of government funds, nepotism, and violations of procurement laws. The Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to investigate the graft cases and ordered Ghosh to take leave.
