On May 3rd, 2024, the Government of India enthusiastically joined the global community in observing International Sun Day, an annual event dedicated to highlighting the manifold benefits of solar energy in fostering a cleaner and healthier planet. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), under the Government of India, orchestrated a remarkable event to mark the occasion—a ‘Run for Sun’ Marathon held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. This marathon, featuring races of 3 km and 5 km, was meticulously crafted to raise awareness about the pivotal role of solar power in combatting climate change and steering humanity towards a cleaner and greener future.

The ‘Run for Sun’ Marathon served as a testament to the nation’s unwavering commitment to harnessing the potential of solar energy for sustainable development and environmental preservation. Secretary of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Shri Bhupinder S. Bhalla, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This initiative underscores our relentless pursuit of sustainable energy solutions and underscores the indispensable role of solar power in our collective journey towards environmental stewardship. The Marathon perfectly aligns with the Government’s vision to promote physical fitness and well-being, encouraging citizens to adopt an active lifestyle while advocating for renewable energy. We express our sincere gratitude to all participants whose enthusiasm and support contributed to the resounding success of this event. We eagerly anticipate building upon this momentum and establishing it as an enduring tradition.”

Furthermore, as part of the International Sun Day celebrations, Solar Stops were erected in six cities across India—Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Vadodara, Guwahati, Varanasi, and Chennai. These Solar Stops served as informative hubs, showcasing a diverse range of exhibits that elucidated the significance and benefits of solar energy. Strategically located in prominent malls, these installations aimed to educate and engage citizens on the innovative and eco-friendly aspects of solar power.

In addition to the Marathon and Solar Stops, the Ministry introduced another captivating initiative—Solart, an All-India Intra-School Solar Art Competition. Solart offers school students across India a creative platform to express their appreciation for solar energy through artistic endeavors. By encouraging participation and creativity, the competition seeks to foster awareness and understanding of solar energy among the youth. Winners of the competition, as determined by participating schools, will be honored with commendation certificates from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy.

Through these multifaceted initiatives, the Government of India reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting solar energy and environmental sustainability. By engaging citizens, especially the youth, in activities that celebrate the potential of solar power, India aims to accelerate its transition towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future. International Sun Day serves as a poignant reminder of the immense possibilities offered by solar energy in addressing global challenges and building a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
