On January 7, 2025, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar held a press conference to announce the schedule for the Delhi Assembly elections and address concerns regarding the electoral process. The elections are scheduled for February 5, with vote counting on February 8.

During the conference, CEC Kumar addressed allegations of manipulation in electoral rolls and the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He emphasized the transparency and rigor of the electoral process, noting that there are approximately 70 steps involving political parties and candidates, who have the opportunity to raise claims and objections. Kumar stated, “All the claims and objections that come up are shared with all the political parties.”

Kumar also addressed concerns about voter turnout data, particularly increases after 5 PM on polling days. He explained that such increases are inherent in the aggregation process, as polling officials perform multiple functions near closing time, and some polling parties report later. He clarified that the voter turnout app does not include postal ballots, which are counted separately.

In response to allegations of wrongful additions or deletions in voter lists, Kumar reiterated that due process is rigorously followed, with no deletions made without the required Form 7. He emphasized the involvement of political parties at every stage, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Concluding the press conference, CEC Kumar announced his plans to retire, expressing intentions to “detoxify” for a few months in the Himalayas before dedicating himself to charitable endeavors.

The Election Commission’s reaffirmation of the electoral process’s integrity aims to bolster public confidence as Delhi prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections.
