China Opposes India’s And The US’s Attempt To Have The UN Designate Shahid Mahmood As A Global Terrorist
A request by India and the US to designate Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Shahid Mahmood as a global terrorist at the UN was put on hold by China on October 19.
This is the fourth time in recent months that Beijing has organized moves to impose UNSC sanctions on terrorists based in Pakistan.
Mahmood has been recognized as a long-time senior member of the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Since 2007, he has been a part of the team. Mahmood was recognized by the Treasury Department of the US authorities during the Obama administration as a member of the LeT publishing wing in 2013.
According to a news release with the Treasury Department, Mahmood asserted in 2016 that assaulting India and the United States should be LeT’s top priority.
Additionally, he collaborated closely with the leader of LeT and Jamat-ud-Dawah (JuD), Hafiz Saeed, to establish bases and supporters in India by transferring money under the guise of charitable or religious activity that would ultimately be used for anti-Indian and terrorist actions.
He is close friends with Sajid Mir, the terrorist mastermind who planned the assaults on Mumbai on November 26. China vetoed Sajid Mir’s UNSC designation in September.
Mahmood worked for the Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), the so-called humanitarian arm of the LeT that solicits money for terrorism while posing as a charity. In Karachi, he served as its head till 2014.
In 2012, the UN classified the FIF as a terrorist organization that was attempting to raise money for the LeT.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in New Delhi filed a case for alleged funding of terrorism against Mahmood and the FIF.
