Chinese People Regard India Favorably For Keeping A Separate Foreign Policy

Professor of International Studies at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), Wang Zhen, spoke with Pranay Sharma about the next CCP Congress, the effects of the war in Ukraine, and the future prospects for China’s relations with the US and India.

What effects has the situation in Ukraine had on China, and what lessons has it drawn from it?

According to the professor, China will be affected by the war in Ukraine in a similar way as India. China is not a participant in this military battle, but because of the increase in the price of food and oil, China must pay for this sudden war. China’s direct investments, as well as its commercial and trade interests in Russia and Ukraine, have taken significant losses. The war has made cooperation and investment unpredictable and damaged the recent foreign strategic environment that supported China’s economic development. If the conflict in Ukraine has taught us anything, it is that peace must be carefully fostered since it is so fragile.

Do advancing Indo-US relations cause China to be alarmed?

India and China are both sovereigns, independent nations. He thinks Indian authorities are sensible enough to create a sensible foreign policy. India is seen as a great power in strategic circles in China primarily because it has maintained its independence in foreign policy following World War II and has refrained from acting as an agent or tool of other great powers. Due to its involvement in directing the worldwide Non-Aligned Movement, India is one of the major forces in the globe.

Can Asia own the 21st century if China and India don’t fully collaborate with one another?

Along with a shared past of traumatic colonial experiences, China and India also have a common set of contemporary problems, including those related to economic growth, the fight against poverty, the improvement of infrastructure, and environmental protection. The rise of these two eastern powers, which together have a combined population of two billion, is sufficient to alter the geopolitical landscape of Asia and the entire world. They are also the two most populous developing nations in the world.
