CJI Gavai Lightens Mood in Court Amid Backlash Over Lord Vishnu Remark

A day after a dramatic courtroom incident in which a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at him, Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai on Tuesday made a light-hearted comment about social media reportage, hinting at how quickly courtroom exchanges can be misconstrued online.
During a routine hearing related to the service conditions of judicial officers, Justice K. Vinod Chandran and the Chief Justice shared a brief off-the-record comment. Turning to a lawyer, CJI Gavai remarked, “These days, we never know what will be reported on social media; your client might get offended.” His comment drew laughter from the courtroom, easing tensions following recent controversy.
The remark came a day after advocate Rakesh Kishore caused chaos in the Supreme Court by attempting to hurl a shoe at the Chief Justice. Kishore shouted slogans accusing Gavai of insulting Sanatan Dharma, before being escorted out by security personnel. The incident followed widespread outrage on social media over the Chief Justice’s earlier remarks during a hearing concerning the restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.
While dismissing that petition, CJI Gavai had reportedly told the petitioner, “If you are a devout follower, pray to the deity to do something,” a comment that triggered criticism from some groups who claimed it mocked religious sentiments.
Despite the uproar, CJI Gavai has maintained composure, continuing regular court proceedings without disruption. He has clarified that his remarks were taken out of context and that he holds deep respect for all religions. His recent courtroom quip about social media appeared to reflect a broader frustration with the speed and distortion of online narratives surrounding judicial comments.
The Supreme Court has not announced any disciplinary action regarding Monday’s shoe-throwing incident.
