On Monday, the Supreme Court mandated a CBI inquiry into claims of custodial torture involving a Jammu and Kashmir police constable at the Joint Interrogation Centre situated in Kupwara. The Supreme Court also ordered the J&K administration to provide a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the constable.

The court has requested a status update on the investigation by September.

The petitioner claims he was violently tortured and mutilated during his detention at the Kupwara interrogation center. The request aimed to register an FIR against the individuals accountable and called for an inquiry by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or the CBI. The petitioner additionally sought the cancellation of an FIR filed at Kupwara police station under Section 309 of the IPC.
