Cyclone Dana destroys trees : kills 1 in West Bengal

Today, Cyclone Dana struck the coast of Odisha, destroying trees, causing electricity lines to snap in multiple locations, and killing one person in West Bengal. With winds between 100 and 110 kmph, the storm made landfall between Bhitarkanika and Dhamra.Around midnight, Cyclone Dana started to make landfall on the Odisha coast, bringing with it exceptionally heavy rain and wind gusts of 110 kmph across the districts of Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore, and Jagatsinghpur.

In an update at around 10 a.m., the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the system took at least eight and a half hours to enter the mainland and that the landing process was finished.The weather agency predicted that Dana, which Qatar had named, would gradually wane over the course of the next six hours.

Odisha reported that trees were being uprooted and that certain regions were being flooded. According to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the state has succeeded in its “Zero Casualty Mission” because there have been no reports of any fatalities or injuries brought on by the powerful cyclonic storm.

A person passed away in Patharpratima, in the South 24 Parganas district of neighboring West Bengal. He died while working on a cable during the storm. The cyclone’s effects were felt in Kolkata and East Midnapore, and other locations reported waterlogging.Services at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar and the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata were restored at 8 a.m. today after being halted on Thursday night as a precaution.

As they prepared for the powerful cyclonic storm, officials in both states evacuated thousands of people, closed schools, canceled over 400 trains, and halted airline operations.The Mohan Charan Majhi-led government of Odisha reported that 385 rescue teams, including members of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) 51, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, and fire and forest personnel, had evacuated roughly 5.8 lakh people.

In Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said 2,43,374 people have taken shelter in camps. She also stayed the entire Thursday night at the state secretariat and personally monitored the situation.
