News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/18th March 2026

A devastating fire broke out in a multi-storey residential building in the Palam area of New Delhi on Wednesday morning, leaving at least nine people dead, including three children, and several others injured. The incident triggered a large-scale emergency response, with authorities rushing multiple fire engines to the site to contain the blaze and rescue those trapped inside.

According to officials, the fire was reported early in the morning, prompting the deployment of around 30 fire tenders. Firefighters battled intense flames and thick smoke as they worked to bring the situation under control. During the rescue operation, several residents were evacuated, while some reportedly jumped from the building in a desperate attempt to escape the fire.

Emergency teams managed to rescue around ten individuals, many of whom sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities stated that the condition of some of the injured remains critical.

Preliminary information suggests that the building had a basement, ground floor, and four upper floors. While the lower levels were being used for storage of goods such as clothes and cosmetics, the upper floors were occupied as residential units. Officials suspect that the presence of combustible materials may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Senior government officials expressed grief over the loss of lives and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the incident and assess any lapses in safety measures.
