Delhi HC Defers Bail for Rajpal Yadav in ₹9 Crore Cheque Bounce Case

Bollywood actor and comedian Rajpal Yadav remains in judicial custody as the Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined to grant him immediate relief in connection with a long-running cheque bounce case involving alleged dues of nearly ₹9 crore. The court heard Yadav’s bail plea but decided to defer the matter, directing that he continue to remain in jail until the next hearing.
The case stems from a financial dispute linked to a stalled film project, for which Yadav had reportedly taken substantial loans. Over time, the amount escalated due to interest and penalties, eventually leading to multiple cheque bounce complaints. Despite several opportunities given by lower courts and the High Court to settle the dues or honour commitments made earlier, the actor allegedly failed to comply with court directions.
During the hearing, the High Court made strong observations, noting that Yadav’s incarceration was a consequence of his repeated inability to fulfil assurances given to the court. The judge pointed out that the matter had been pending for years and that the accused had sought extensions on multiple occasions without meaningful resolution.Yadav had surrendered earlier this month following a court order and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. His legal team argued that he was facing financial hardship and sought interim bail, stressing his long career in the film industry and his willingness to resolve the dispute. However, the court was not convinced to grant immediate relief and scheduled the next hearing for a later date.
The case has triggered widespread reaction within the film fraternity. Several actors, producers and industry colleagues have reportedly extended moral and financial support to Yadav, expressing concern over his situation. Messages of solidarity have also surfaced on social media, with many highlighting his contribution to Hindi cinema as a character actor known for comic roles.
Yadav’s wife has publicly acknowledged the support coming in from the industry, thanking well-wishers for standing by the family during a difficult phase. At the same time, legal experts note that the case underscores the seriousness with which courts view financial default and non-compliance with judicial orders. The High Court is expected to take up the bail plea again at the next hearing, which will be crucial in determining whether the actor is granted temporary relief or continues to remain in custody as the legal proceedings move forward.
