Delhi, the capital city of India, witnessed a significant improvement in air quality during April 2024, marking a notable contrast to previous years, thanks to a combination of favorable meteorological conditions and concerted efforts by various stakeholders.
According to data from the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM), April 2024 saw the highest number of ‘Good to Moderate’ air quality days in Delhi compared to the same period over the past six years, excluding 2020, which saw a lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The city experienced 23 days with ‘Good to Moderate’ air quality, as opposed to 17 in 2023, 0 in 2022, 18 in 2021, 30 in 2020, 12 in 2019, and 8 in 2018.
Moreover, Delhi managed to keep ‘Poor to Severe’ air quality days under control, with only seven days recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 200, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This is a notable improvement compared to previous years, with 13 days in 2023, 30 in 2022, 12 in 2021, 18 in 2019, and 22 in 2018.
The average AQI for Delhi during April 2024 remained in the Moderate category, staying below 200. This marked the second lowest monthly average AQI for April in the past six years, following the lockdown year of 2020. The month-wise daily average AQI for April 2024 was 182, while it was 180 in 2023, 255 in 2022, 202 in 2021, 110 in 2020, 211 in 2019, and 222 in 2018.
Significantly, the concentration levels of PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants also witnessed a notable reduction during April 2024 compared to previous years, further indicating the positive impact on air quality.
The CAQM, working closely with various stakeholders, has been instrumental in implementing effective measures for the prevention, control, and abatement of air pollution in the NCR region. Established as a statutory body in August 2021, the CAQM serves as an overarching authority for air quality management in Delhi NCR and adjoining areas. It aims to facilitate better coordination, research, and resolution of issues related to air quality, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing air pollution challenges.
The establishment of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the pressing issue of air pollution in the region. With sustained efforts and collaborative initiatives, Delhi aims to continue its trajectory towards achieving cleaner and healthier air for its residents.
