The Lok Sabha’s Winter Session, which was disrupted by problems ranging from Adani to billionaire George Soros’ “links” with the Congress leadership and Amit Shah’s Ambedkar statements, had a productivity of 57.87 percent, official sources stated on Friday.
The Lower House convened on November 25 and was adjourned sine die (indefinitely) on Friday following protests by the opposition and Treasury benches over the purported disrespect to BR Ambedkar and Speaker Om Birla’s instructions to members not to organize demonstrations outside any gate of Parliament.Among the important measures introduced during the session were two that established the system for holding simultaneous elections.
On Friday, the two proposals were forwarded to a joint committee of Parliament for review and further deliberations.
The Lower House had a discussion last week commemorating 75 years since the Constitution’s adoption, during which the Treasury and opposition benches unleashed a series of assaults on one another. Last week, the Lok Sabha met for an extra day to debate how the Constitution works. The Constitution was debated for 16 hours in the Lok Sabha and 17 hours in the Rajya Sabha.
However, no half-hour or short-term conversations were held. During these debates, ministers must reply to matters highlighted by members. According to the legislative research group PRS India, Question Hour did not last more than 10 minutes on 12 of the Lok Sabha’s 20 days. The Lok Sabha received multiple notices of adjournment motions, but none were accepted .
