On Friday, Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra asserted that a crisis in leadership within the BJP, along with its inability to agree on a chief ministerial candidate, resulted in the implementation of President’s rule in the state. Meghachandra also mentioned that the central BJP leaders have at last started to grasp the situation on the ground in the conflict-ridden state.
The leadership crisis that emerged following the chief minister’s resignation, along with a divided BJP regarding the selection of a new CM, resulted in the imposition of President’s rule, he informed reporters here. On Thursday evening, President’s rule was implemented in Manipur and the assembly was placed under suspended animation, following Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation from his position, which resulted in political instability in the state.
He noted that it is the responsibility of the Union government to safeguard the territorial and administrative integrity of Manipur. Singh, who led the BJP administration in Manipur, stepped down as chief minister following almost 21 months of ethnic turmoil that has resulted in more than 250 fatalities thus far.
The Manipur assembly is set to serve until 2027. A Sharda, the president of BJP Manipur, stated on Thursday that the assembly is currently in a state of suspended animation as per the constitutional procedure and emphasized that the House has not been dissolved so far.
