Drones and Cyberattacks Expose Weaknesses in Europe’s Aviation Security

A wave of drone incursions and cyberattacks has disrupted several major European airports, raising concerns about vulnerabilities in the continent’s aviation security systems. The incidents, which unfolded almost simultaneously, are being described by experts as examples of “hybrid threats” targeting both physical and digital infrastructure.

In Denmark and Norway, drone sightings forced temporary shutdowns at airports in Copenhagen and Oslo, grounding flights and causing hours of delays. At the same time, airports in London Heathrow, Berlin, and Brussels reported cyberattacks on check-in systems, believed to be ransomware-based, which crippled passenger processing and created long queues.

Some European officials have linked the surge in such attacks to suspected Russian actors, though Moscow has denied any involvement.

The disruptions highlighted how dependent modern air travel is on interconnected digital systems. Security experts warn that the blend of drones, GPS interference, and hacking represents a new frontier of threats for aviation authorities.

While advanced countermeasures such as anti-drone jamming devices and stronger cybersecurity protocols exist, many airports lack the financial resources to implement them swiftly. Industry leaders are now calling for coordinated investments, tighter regulations, and real-time threat monitoring to strengthen resilience across Europe’s aviation hubs.

As geopolitical tensions rise, particularly in the wake of the Ukraine war, Europe’s airspace is expected to face more frequent and sophisticated threats. Regulators now face the challenge of balancing operational efficiency with the urgent need to harden aviation security against hybrid attacks.
