Europe Gripped by Deadly Heatwave as France Reports 18 Deaths, Temperatures Set to Rise Further

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/24th June 2026

A severe heatwave sweeping across Europe has claimed at least 18 lives in France and prompted widespread health alerts, school closures and emergency measures as temperatures continue to soar across the continent. Authorities have warned that even hotter conditions may be on the way, raising fears of additional casualties and disruptions in the coming days.

Among the victims were two young children, aged two and four, who were found unconscious inside a parked family car in southeastern France. The extreme weather has also been linked to the deaths of several elderly residents in the Bordeaux region, where officials reported heat-related health complications among vulnerable populations.

France recorded some of its highest-ever June temperatures on Monday. Bordeaux registered a scorching 41.9 degrees Celsius, surpassing a previous record set last year, while the city of Poitiers reached 41.2 degrees Celsius, breaking a temperature record that had stood since 1947. Across the border in Spain, temperatures approached 40 degrees Celsius in areas that are usually much cooler at this time of year.

The heatwave has stretched across much of Western Europe, affecting France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. Meteorologists attribute the phenomenon to an “Omega block,” a weather pattern that traps hot air over the region while drawing intense heat northward from the Sahara Desert. Experts say the system is responsible for the prolonged and unusually severe temperatures being experienced across the continent.

Authorities have issued red and orange heat alerts in several countries and urged residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, stay hydrated and check on elderly relatives and neighbours. France has also witnessed a rise in drowning incidents as people seek relief from the extreme temperatures in rivers, lakes and other unsupervised swimming areas. Officials reported around 20 such deaths since the weekend. With forecasts predicting temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in many regions over the coming days, governments remain on high alert as the continent braces for a potentially worsening crisis.
