In the midst of scorching Indian summers, there emerges a juicy, tangy, and sweet savior: the mango. Hanging from trees with branches bending under the weight of plump, sun-kissed fruit, mangoes are a tropical delight cherished by many. However, not all mangoes are created equal. Some varieties stand out for their exceptional taste, rarity, and hefty price tags. Let’s delve into the world of the most expensive mangoes that defy the ordinary.
- Sindhri Mango:
Originating from the Sindh region of Pakistan, Sindhri mangoes are renowned for their distinctively sweet and fragrant taste. With large size and smooth, bright yellow skin, they are beloved in both India and Pakistan. Favored for their exceptional flavor, it’s believed that the fertile soil and warm climate of Sindh contribute to their unique taste. According to an India Today article, a single Sindhri Mango can fetch prices as high as Rs 3,000.
- Kohitur Mango:
Kohitur mangoes are prized for their distinctive color and texture and are exceedingly rare to find. According to CondeNast Traveller, these mangoes have a fascinating history, believed to have been created for NawabSiraj-ud-Daulah in the 18th century by a horticulturist named Hakim Ada Mohammadi. Reserved for royal families, Kohitur mangoes are a cross between the now-extinct Kalopahar and another unrecorded variant. Grown predominantly in Murshidabad, West Bengal, they can command prices ranging from Rs 3,000 to a staggering Rs 12,000 per piece.
- Alphonso Mango:
Alphonso mangoes, often referred to as the “king of mangoes,” are typically grown in the coastal regions of western India, including Ratnagiri, Devgad, and the Konkan region, as well as in South Gujarat. Renowned for their vibrant golden-orange skin and luscious, fiberless flesh, they are highly sought after. In 2023, Alphonso mangoes were the most sold variety on Zepto, an instant delivery app, with Indians ordering mangoes worth Rs 25 crore in April alone. During peak season, prices can soar up to Rs 1,500 per kilogram.
- Noorjahan Mango:
Named after the Mughal queen, Noorjahan mangoes are celebrated for their regal taste and impressive size. Hailing from Afghanistan and making their way to India via Gujarat, these mangoes can grow up to a foot long and weigh up to 3.5 kilograms. Despite their restricted production and consumption primarily in Gujarat, they can fetch prices of up to Rs 1,000 per piece.
- Miyazaki Mango:
Grown predominantly in Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture, Miyazaki mangoes are renowned for their exorbitant prices, reaching up to Rs 3 lakh per kilogram in international markets. While primarily cultivated in Japan, a few farmers in West Bengal, India, have managed to grow this premium variety. Showcased at a mango festival in Siliguri in 2023, Miyazaki mangoes are cultivated under controlled conditions for optimal quality, boasting large size, rich aroma, and intense sweetness.
As the mango season approaches, these exquisite varieties offer mango enthusiasts an opportunity to indulge in the finest and rarest fruits nature has to offer.
