The BJP called the Congress’s condemnation of Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist, and several other Ladakhis’ incarceration “hypocrisy in the extreme” on Tuesday.

Wangchuk and more than a hundred Ladakhis, who had marched to Delhi to demand that the union territory be added to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, were arrested on Monday for disobeying prohibitory orders at the boundary of the capital and transported to various police stations. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, criticized the Center on Tuesday for Wangchuk and other detainees’ imprisonment, calling it “unacceptable” and stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must pay attention to Ladakh’s voice.

Asked about the Congress’ reaction, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar said, “I don’t know the facts. I will have to check the facts.” “If Rahul Gandhi has a comment to make, why (does) he maintain a conspicuous silence when cartoonists are lifted in Kolkata and a satirist is jailed in Tamil Nadu,” Shankar asked, adding that the Congress leader’s reaction to Wangchuk’s detention was “hypocrisy in extreme”.

In 2012, a professor at Jadavpur University and his neighbor were taken into custody in West Bengal for sharing a cartoon of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on social media. A freelance cartoonist was detained in Tamil Nadu in 2017 after it was claimed that one of his caricatures offensively portrayed the then-chief minister, K Palaniswami.
