Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days following his arrest in a sexual harassment case, in a development that has drawn significant attention within the film industry and beyond.
A court in Ernakulam ordered the remand after the director was produced before a magistrate. He has been lodged in a sub-jail as authorities continue their investigation into the allegations. The case is based on a complaint filed by a woman actor, who accused Ranjith of inappropriate behaviour and attempted sexual assault during a film shoot.
According to the complaint, the alleged incident took place earlier this year at a shooting location, where the filmmaker reportedly invited the actor to his caravan and behaved in a manner she described as offensive and unacceptable. Acting on her statement, the police registered a case and initiated an inquiry, which led to his arrest after preliminary findings suggested sufficient grounds for further action.
Officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing and will involve collecting additional evidence, including witness testimonies and other relevant material. Reports indicate that a Special Investigation Team may handle the case, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations. Ranjith has denied the accusations, maintaining that the claims against him are false. His legal team is expected to challenge the case in court and seek bail in the coming days.
The incident has once again brought focus to concerns over misconduct and harassment in the Malayalam film industry. It follows broader discussions about workplace safety and accountability, particularly in light of previous reports highlighting issues faced by women in the sector. As the probe continues, the case is likely to remain under close scrutiny, with further legal developments expected soon.
