A major fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at Brahmaputra Apartments, a multi-storey residential complex on Bharat Ratna Marg (B.R. Marg) in central Delhi, which houses several Members of Parliament. The incident occurred barely a few hundred metres from the Parliament complex, prompting immediate evacuation and emergency response.
According to officials, the blaze began on one of the upper floors of the building. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the windows as residents rushed out to safety. Fire tenders and police teams reached the spot soon after receiving the alert, and the fire was brought under control after an extensive operation. No injuries or casualties have been reported so far.
Initial reports suggest that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Authorities are investigating whether an electrical short circuit or other technical fault triggered the incident. Fire department officials have assured that a detailed inspection will follow to assess the extent of damage and to identify safety lapses.
However, questions were raised about the speed of the emergency response. Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale, a resident of the complex, posted on social media that no fire brigade had arrived for nearly 30 minutes after calls were made to authorities. His remarks sparked concern over preparedness levels in such a high-security area.
Located in one of the most sensitive zones of the capital, Brahmaputra Apartments accommodates both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members. The incident has highlighted the urgent need for regular fire safety audits in government housing and VIP residential zones. Officials from the Delhi Fire Service and local police have confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and evaluate preventive measures for the future.
