A tragic shooting at Bangkok’s renowned Or Tor Kor food market on Monday claimed the lives of five individuals, including four security personnel and one market employee. Two other vendors sustained injuries in the incident. The suspected gunman, identified as a Thai national, reportedly died by suicide at the scene.
Authorities believe the attack was driven by a personal conflict, as the assailant had prior disputes with some of the security guards. Officials have ruled out any connection to ongoing regional tensions, particularly with neighboring Cambodia.
The shooting occurred at Or Tor Kor, a popular destination for high-quality produce and seafood, located near the Chatuchak area. Shoppers and vendors were left stunned by the violence, with emergency responders rushing to secure the scene and aid the injured.
While gun ownership is relatively widespread in Thailand, incidents of mass shootings remain rare. However, the country has witnessed several deadly shootings in recent years, including high-profile attacks in 2020 and 2023.
Police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are reviewing security measures at public marketplaces across the city. The tragedy has sparked renewed debate over firearm regulations and workplace conflict resolution in Thailand.
