Four Women Are Battling To Preserve A 200-Year-Old Mansion In Kolkata

Babur Bari is home to many memories, yet it refuses to be merely another Kolkata memory. It is situated in a section of the city that seems poised to emerge as the next Instagram. Slatted windows and well-proportioned homes stand in contrast to absurdly huge buildings built of tinted glass and tiles, as well as to sluggish mudikhanas (grocery) stores that are losing the battle against two-minute delivery services.

In addition to preserving a gorgeous home in Kolkata’s center, four women—Nandita Basu, 79, her only daughter Krishnakali, the young carer Moitrei Das, and chef Jhorna Das—are also preserving a way of life.

North Kolkata was mostly uninhabited

When Nandita’s father-in-law, businessman Chandi Basu, made the decision to construct a home in Beleghata in 1855, the bustling hill district of Kolkata was essentially a desert.

The East Kolkata Wetlands, a substantial network of both natural and artificial wetlands in the eastern portion of the city, is today known as Chandi Basu’s home. Chandi Basu, however, who was setting up a business in India, was actually supposed to dwell there. He conducts business there.

The house is a real testament to its name

The Barrister Babur Bari Mansion is a gorgeous, small structure that appears to be much larger than it actually is. Fifty years ago, Nandita’s father-in-law, Barrister Basu, operated his law practice out of a sizable office on the ground floor of the house. the mansion was named after him because of his notoriety.

a little Thakurdalan (courtyard) with pillars and verandas that show European design influences. which extended through the door. An alcove can be used to access a more private patio. The red oxide flooring and subdued sensibility of the outer courtyard are replaced with the turquoise blue and cobblestone floors of the inner courtyard. The mood and sensitivity levels have changed noticeably.
