France’s Recognition of Palestine Sparks Global Divide

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / July 25, 2025

In a landmark decision, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will formally recognise the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. The declaration positions France as the first G7 nation to take such a step, further intensifying global debate over the future of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Macron justified the move as a necessary contribution toward a peaceful two-state solution, urging the international community to support mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine. He emphasised that the decision aims to revive diplomatic momentum and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, while calling for the disarmament of Hamas and the reconstruction of Palestinian territories.

The announcement drew sharp criticism from Israel and its allies. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the move as a “reward for terrorism,” warning it would embolden extremist groups. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar concerns, calling the recognition a “reckless and shameful” act that disrespects victims of Hamas’ October 7 attacks.

Conversely, Palestinian leaders welcomed France’s decision. Palestinian Authority representative Hussein Al-Sheikh described it as a milestone in affirming Palestinian rights and international legitimacy. Hamas, while urging further global support, called the decision a “step in the right direction.”

European nations responded with mixed views. Spain and Ireland lauded the announcement, urging others to follow suit, while Germany and the UK remained cautious. Canada acknowledged France’s stance but refrained from endorsing recognition, instead emphasising humanitarian aid and ceasefire efforts.

France’s recognition comes ahead of the UN-led Gaza peace conference later this month, where key global players are expected to discuss comprehensive solutions to the ongoing crisis. With over 140 countries already recognising Palestine, France’s move could influence further shifts within Western diplomatic circles and reshape future negotiations in the Middle East.
