News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 25th January 2025
Officials stated that Pune has recorded six new suspected instances of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), an uncommon neurological condition. The overall count of cases in the area now is 73. “The overall total of GBS cases rose to 73, consisting of 47 men and 26 women.” Among these, 14 are receiving ventilator assistance,” an official from the state health department was quoted by the news agency as stating.
In the meantime, the health department has increased its initiatives to examine the unexpected surge in cases and established a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to address this after initially identifying 24 suspected cases earlier this week.
Guillain-Barré syndrome is an uncommon neurological disorder where the immune system of the body targets a portion of the peripheral nervous system, as stated by the World Health Organization.
In this syndrome, the nerves that manage muscle activity and those that transmit pain, temperature, and touch sensations are impacted, resulting in muscle weakness, loss of feeling in the legs and/or arms, as well as challenges in swallowing or breathing. It is an uncommon condition, and while it is more prevalent in males and adults, individuals of all ages may be affected. Officials have notified the public that Guillain-Barré Syndrome is concerning, but it cannot cause an epidemic or a pandemic.
The Rapid Response Team (RRT) of the Maharashtra State Health Department has been actively conducting surveillance in impacted regions in partnership with the Pune Municipal Corporation and local health officials. Health authorities have conducted surveys in more than 7,200 residences throughout the city and its surrounding rural areas. The survey initiatives have been conducted in various locations, including Pune Municipal Corporation, Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and rural districts. Up to now, 1,943 houses have been surveyed within the PMC boundaries, 1,750 houses in Chinchwad, and 3,522 homes in rural areas.
