Gemini to take over in 2025

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 15th March 2025

Following the introduction of Google Assistant in 2016, Google has now revealed that it intends to discontinue the service. The company emphasized that Gemini will take its place on Android devices in late 2025. Users will be provided with an exact date for this change in advance. In the upcoming months, users who continue to utilize the Assistant will receive a prompt for an upgrade.

“Nearly a decade later, we’re in the midst of another platform shift this time, generative AI is transforming the way we interact with technology,” Google states

This shift comes as new Android phones, including Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola, released in the past year, have already made Gemini the default assistant. Google also mentioned that millions of users have already switched to Gemini.

It states, “Over the coming months, we’re upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini; and later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads on mobile app stores.”

Google laid its aims with Gemini today, with Astra-powered video and screen-sharing capabilities set for this month.

It states, “We believe an assistant should be personal to you, and aware of the world around you. It should be able to interact with the apps and services you already use. And it should make you more productive, more creative and a bit more curious.”

Google announced that it will also update tablets, vehicles, and devices linked to phones, such as headphones and watches, to Gemini. Additionally, it is introducing a new Gemini-driven experience to your home devices such as speakers, displays, and televisions.

In the interim, Google Assistant will continue to be accessible on these devices. This declaration follows Google’s announcement of its upcoming AI models, designed to enhance robots and enable them to function similarly to humans: Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics ER.

The latest models present enhancements in three crucial aspects that Google DeepMind considers essential for creating efficient robots: generality, interactivity, and dexterity. Gemini Robotics excels not only in adjusting to new circumstances but also in engaging with people and its environment more effectively. Moreover, it is capable of performing intricate tasks, like folding paper or removing a bottle cap.
