Gen Z Turns Heirloom Jewellery into Everyday Fashion Statement

Gen Z is transforming the way heirloom jewellery is worn, making it a part of their daily style rather than saving it for weddings or festive occasions. The younger generation is pairing traditional pieces with contemporary outfits, from corporate suits to casual dresses, creating a bold fusion of heritage and modernity.
Garima Maheshwari, Head of Design at Tanishq, calls this shift “a rebellion against algo-driven sameness,” noting that it reflects a deeper desire to embrace cultural roots while showcasing individuality. This style evolution is not confined to India, as similar trends are emerging globally.
Bollywood celebrities, including Janhvi Kapoor, are popularising the movement by flaunting South Indian heritage ornaments like kamarbandhs, jhumkas, and maang tikkas on social media. Their styling choices blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary flair, inspiring younger audiences to experiment with their own family heirlooms.
The approach mirrors the modernisation of saree draping, where traditional attire is paired with unconventional blouses or tops. Similarly, heirloom jewellery such as the South Indian mugappu—a brooch-like ornament with a chain—is being reimagined for everyday wear.
Maheshwari emphasises that for Gen Z, these accessories are not merely decorative; they carry personal stories and cultural narratives, turning each look into a statement of identity. By wearing and reinterpreting family treasures, young fashion enthusiasts are creating a bridge between the past and present, ensuring that traditional jewellery remains relevant while retaining its timeless elegance.
