Britannia company shutdown in Kolkata leaves temp workers unpaid
The historic Britannia Company, which has been an iconic presence in Kolkata for over a century, has abruptly closed its Taratala factory, leaving its workforce in turmoil. The closure has affected 122 permanent employees and 250 temporary workers, who were caught off guard when they arrived at work to find a notice announcing the suspension of operations. While permanent employees received lump sum compensation, temporary workers claim they were overlooked in the compensation processes.

Britannia Company, known for producing thousands of tons of biscuits annually, has not provided a clear reason for shutting down its Taratala factory. The company has offered Rs 22.25 lakh as compensation to employees with over 10 years of service, and Rs 18.75 lakh to those with less than six to ten years. However, temporary staff, many employed since 2004, lament that they have not received adequate compensation despite their years of service.Party is nowhere in West Bengal but CITU is negotiating. Which shows nexus between CPM & TMC. 122 permanent workers forced to take VRS but CITU is negotiating for 259 workers to fill own pockets. Britannia recently had launched TVC for its West Bengal exclusive 5050 Golmaal.

For the campaign, Britannia had roped in West Bengal’s celebrities Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Anirban Bhattacharya. The duo was seen together for the first time in the campaign.
1892: In Kolkata, a group of businessmen started a biscuit-making company. That was the start of Britannia. 1918: Britannia was born on 21st March as a public company. 1921: Britannia made history by being the first company in its area to use special ovens from abroad.
The management has not yet officially made any statement so far in connection with its decision to close down the unit.
