Google Gemini Introduces AI Music Generation Feature Powered by Lyria 3

Google has rolled out a new artificial intelligence-powered music creation tool within its Gemini platform, enabling users to generate original songs using simple text prompts. The feature is driven by Lyria 3, the latest version of Google DeepMind’s generative music model, and is now available to eligible users globally.
With the update, users can create short music tracks of up to 30 seconds by entering descriptive prompts that specify mood, genre, instruments or themes. The system can also produce matching lyrics, offering a complete song structure that includes vocals and instrumental backing. Users are further given options to refine elements such as tempo and style, making the process more interactive and customizable. The tool is currently being introduced to users aged 18 and above, primarily on desktop, with mobile support expected soon. It supports multiple languages, expanding accessibility to a global audience. Premium subscribers to Google’s advanced AI plans are expected to receive higher usage limits compared to free-tier users.
Google has clarified that the music generator is intended for creative exploration and casual use rather than professional production. While users can reference specific genres or styles, the company says the system is designed to avoid directly copying or replicating the sound of individual artists. Instead, it interprets prompts as broad stylistic inspiration.
To ensure transparency, every AI-generated track includes a digital watermark through Google’s SynthID technology. This watermark allows identification of AI-generated content and aims to address concerns around authenticity and misuse. The Gemini app also includes tools to help users determine whether a piece of audio was created using AI.
In addition to its integration within Gemini, the Lyria 3 model is also being incorporated into YouTube’s Dream Track feature, allowing content creators to add custom AI-generated soundtracks to their videos.
