Government Directs Refineries to Boost LPG Output, Prioritise Domestic Supply

The Union government has asked oil refineries across the country to maximise the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ensure that supplies are prioritised for domestic consumers. The move is aimed at strengthening the availability of cooking fuel for households amid concerns over possible disruptions in global energy supplies.

Officials have directed refineries to increase LPG output to the highest possible levels and channel the supplies primarily to state-run oil marketing companies. These companies are responsible for distributing LPG cylinders to households across the country and play a critical role in maintaining the supply chain for cooking gas.

As part of the directive, refineries have also been instructed to avoid diverting key LPG components such as propane and butane for petrochemical production. Instead, these gases should be used primarily for producing LPG to support domestic consumption. The measure is intended to ensure that sufficient quantities of cooking gas remain available for Indian households.

The decision comes at a time when global energy markets are facing uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions in key oil-producing regions.
