In a major push to make legal aid more accessible, the Government of India has launched Nyaya Setu on WhatsApp, allowing citizens to seek basic legal guidance through one of the country’s most widely used messaging platforms. The initiative is aimed at bridging the gap between people and legal services, reducing the need for physical visits to courts or legal offices.

Nyaya Setu, initially introduced in August 2024, was designed to provide a simplified interface for accessing legal information and advice. Its integration with WhatsApp now allows users to connect with the service using their mobile phones, ensuring that legal guidance is available anytime and anywhere. Citizens can initiate interaction by messaging 7217711814, which appears as “Tele‑Law” on the app. Once connected, a chatbot guides users step by step, offering options for general legal advice, assistance with filing complaints, and information on their rights and remedies. Some features are accessible without verification, though the platform recommends confirming the user’s mobile number for a more personalised experience.

The Ministry of Law and Justice announced the rollout through official channels, highlighting the government’s commitment to digital governance and inclusive access to justice. Officials said the move is intended to reach citizens directly on a platform they use daily, streamlining legal support for individuals who may face barriers such as distance, lack of awareness, or unfamiliarity with legal processes.

Nyaya Setu on WhatsApp is compatible with Android, iOS, and web versions of the app, making it widely accessible regardless of device. Users can seek advice on a range of legal matters, from family disputes to consumer grievances, as well as receive guidance on navigating formal procedures. The government emphasised that the platform does not replace lawyers or formal legal representation but serves as a first point of contact for citizens in need of guidance.
