Governor Dissolves 17th West Bengal Assembly Following Election Outcome
Correspondent Ajay Choudhury/ 7th May 2026

R. N. Ravi has formally dissolved the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, 2026, under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India.
The decision comes after the completion of the Assembly’s five-year term and follows the 2026 state elections, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a majority, ending the tenure of the All India Trinamool Congress government. As a result, the outgoing Council of Ministers led by Mamata Banerjee has ceased to hold office.
The official notification regarding the dissolution was published in an extraordinary issue of the Kolkata Gazette, clearing the way for the formation of a new government in West Bengal.
