News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 8th January 2025

One of the workers trapped in an illegal coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasai district was found dead on Wednesday morning, according to officials. The first body has been recovered 48 hours after at least nine miners working in a rat hole mine in Dima Hasao’s Umrangso coal deposits became trapped on Monday morning after the mine was overwhelmed with water.

Deep water divers started the rescue efforts on Tuesday evening, joining personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, and the Army that were already on the scene. Officials have stated that the biggest problem in the rescue attempt is the water levels within the mine, which have a depth of 200 feet.

The government claims the mine was unlawful and has detained one individual in connection with the issue. The trapped men are from Assam, Nepal, and West Bengal.
