In a gruesome incident that has shocked Telangana, police arrested a 27-year-old cab driver for allegedly murdering and dismembering his five-month-pregnant wife, Swathi alias Jyothi, at their home in Medipally. The crime, rooted in prolonged domestic conflict, occurred on Saturday evening after a heated argument over her wish to visit her parents in Vikarabad for a prenatal check-up.
According to investigators, the couple, who had married in January 2024 in a love-cum-arranged ceremony, had a history of frequent disputes. Swathi had filed a domestic violence complaint earlier this year, but it was settled informally through village elders. Despite this, tensions persisted, particularly over the husband’s refusal to let her continue working at a call centre and his suspicions about her loyalty.
On the day of the murder, the argument escalated, and the accused allegedly strangled Swathi to death. He then used a hexa blade to sever her limbs and head, placing the parts in separate plastic bags. In a calculated attempt to conceal the crime, he dumped the severed parts into the Musi River in three separate trips, while the torso remained in their residence.
The accused initially tried to mislead authorities by filing a missing person report. However, inconsistencies in his statements led to his confession during police interrogation. The torso has been sent for post-mortem examination, and DNA testing is being conducted to confirm identity. Special teams, including NDRF and GHMC swimmers, are combing the Musi River to recover the remaining body parts.
The case has reignited concerns about domestic violence and the failure of informal settlements to prevent escalation. Authorities have urged couples facing similar issues to seek formal legal recourse to avert such tragedies.
