The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) opened in Goa with an elaborate cultural parade, marking a departure from the traditional indoor inauguration and transforming Panaji’s streets into a vibrant stage celebrating global cinema and India’s artistic heritage. The event featured more than two dozen floats, including several created by the Goa government, each highlighting diverse themes ranging from regional traditions to the evolution of Indian cinema.
Artists from multiple states performed folk dances representing Odisha, Haryana, Assam, and other regions, turning the parade into a colourful tapestry of cultural expression. The procession also paid tribute to Goan village life, offering glimpses of local customs and folklore through intricately designed displays.
A major attraction was the large-scale production titled Bharat Ek Soor, presented by the Central Bureau of Communication, which brought together over a hundred performers in a unified showcase of music, dance, and storytelling.
Adding to the festive atmosphere were appearances by popular children’s characters such as Chhota Bheem, Motu Patlu, and Bittu Bahanebaaz, drawing enthusiastic responses from younger audiences. The National Film Development Corporation also marked its 50-year milestone with a dedicated float celebrating its longstanding support to Indian filmmakers.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated the festival, praising Goa’s continuing rise as a global filmmaking hub. He highlighted that the festival’s theme, “Convergence of Creativity and Technology,” aligns with India’s growing influence in the digital and creative sectors. Emphasising Goa’s scenic appeal and supportive ecosystem, he noted the state’s increasing popularity among domestic and international filmmakers.
The festival began with a special honour for veteran actor Nandamuri Balakrishna, who was recognised for completing 50 years in the film industry. IFFI 2025 will run until November 28, featuring more than 240 films from over 80 countries, along with workshops, masterclasses, and interactive sessions aimed at fostering global cinematic exchange.
