India Ranks Second Globally in Childhood Obesity, Experts Urge Urgent Action

India now ranks second globally in childhood obesity, trailing only China, raising serious public health concerns. Health experts warn that if current trends continue, nearly 20 million Indian children could be living with obesity by 2040.
Endocrinologists attribute the surge to sedentary lifestyles, rising consumption of ultra-processed foods, sugary beverages, and reduced physical activity, particularly in urban areas. The growing prevalence of childhood obesity is linked to early onset of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hormonal disorders, and long-term cardiovascular risks.
Medical professionals are calling for urgent policy interventions, including taxation on sugar-sweetened beverages, stricter food marketing regulations targeting children, improved school nutrition programmes, and greater emphasis on physical education.
Experts stress that early intervention is critical, noting that childhood obesity often persists into adulthood, placing a heavy burden on the healthcare system and threatening future workforce productivity.
