India – Sri Lanka signed key Defence, Energy Pacts during 3- days visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Island nation

Indian  Prime Minister Modi is the first foreign Head of State or Head of Government to be hosted by President Anura Kumara Disanayaka the President of Sri Lanka since the latter’s assumption of office last year in September 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given ceremonial welcome at the Independence Square ,a place which was used as venue for  first time ever to welcome a foreign Head of State or Head of Government as indicated by Indian Foreign Secretary  Shri Vikram Misri.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi,  was  conferred the Mithra Vibhushana Award, the highest Sri Lankan honour for heads of friendly nations, in Sri Lanka, by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in recognition of his role in boosting bilateral ties on Saturday 05 April 2025. Both nations also inked key pacts including  on defence, energy cooperation following talks between the two leaders. The talks were held a day after Modi arrived in the Sri Lankan capital.  Both nations inked  MoUs on export & import of power including  interconnection of electricity  grid  , development & strengthening of digital infrastructure in Sri Lanka .
A trilateral MOU  inked for developing Trincomalee as an energy hub. This is an MOU  signed between
India, Sri Lanka and  United Arab Emirates. India will  undertake socio-economic projects, focusing on livelihood assistance, agriculture, capacity building, education and other fields, in the eastern province especially, at a cost of Lankan Rs 2.37 billion. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi also met  Leader of the Opposition
in Sri Lanka, Mr. Sajith Premadasa as well as leaders of Indian Origin Tamil (IOT) community during his visit.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has announced India ‘s support for realizing the Sacred City project in Anuradhapura ,development of the Thirukoneswaram temple in Trincomalee ,  development of the Sita Eliya temple complex in Nuwara Eliya.
