India Won’t Strike Trade Deals Under Pressure, Says Piyush Goyal Amid Talks with US

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has asserted that India will not enter into trade agreements under external pressure, stressing that the country prefers negotiations driven by national interest rather than haste or coercion. Speaking about ongoing trade discussions with the United States and the European Union, Goyal said, “We do not do deals with a gun to our head,” indicating India’s firm stance on protecting its economic sovereignty.

Goyal emphasised that New Delhi’s trade policy is guided by long-term strategic goals and not short-term political or diplomatic considerations. He noted that India’s engagement with global partners aims to secure mutually beneficial outcomes, particularly in sectors that bolster domestic industry and job creation.

The minister’s remarks come at a time when India and the US are in the midst of complex trade and investment negotiations, amid geopolitical tensions surrounding energy imports and tariff barriers. Washington has been urging India to align its trade and energy policies with Western standards, particularly regarding oil imports from Russia.

Reaffirming India’s independent approach, Goyal said the government continues to explore new export markets to counter the impact of global tariff challenges. He added that India seeks fair and balanced agreements that support its exporters and strengthen the country’s position in global supply chains.

His statement reflects a broader policy shift toward self-reliance and assertive diplomacy in trade matters. As India positions itself as a major global manufacturing and export hub, officials have maintained that future trade deals must enhance competitiveness without compromising sovereignty. The government’s strategy, Goyal indicated, will prioritise sustainable, interest-driven partnerships over externally dictated timelines.
